Frugality
By Jay | December 4, 2007
I’ve been enjoying a blog called Frugal for Life lately, especially as I am working at becoming more frugal myself. In my last post I wrote about one of my resolutions for the upcoming new year (I’ll be writing more), about how I intend to spend less and save more. Actually I plan to earn more as well, but that will be another resolution and another post. At any rate, there was a link on Frugal for Life to a post on another site — The Consumerist — that really hit home with me: 5 Expenses You Cannot Afford if You Have Debt. It’s a good article so go read it if you have the time. What really hit home is that I have credit card debt, and I am bad with three out of five of these expenses. The five expenses are:
1: Expensive Cars
2: Gym Membership
3: Recreational Shopping
4: Eating Out
5: Cable
Luckily I don’t own a car. This is the one aspect of living in NYC that actually allows people to save money — our mass transit system. For most of us the cost of owning a car is absolutely prohibitive here. I don’t do recreational shopping either. I’m one of those people who HATES shopping. But I do have cable and I rarely watch it, so that’s a wasted $80 per month. I also eat out; not that often, but it adds up. These were both on my resolution list to cut out, so I’m glad to have more inspiration.
My gym membership is expensive. This is something that I DO use, a lot, so I plan to keep it — my one luxury.
It’s amazing the amount of information and inspiration available on the blogosphere.

Jay,
I came across your blog before but didn’t bookmark it and lost it. I have now found you and bookmarked you to keep up to date on how ‘family’ is doing. Keep up the reduction of debt and weight, I have great hope that you will get to where you want to be!
