Working From Home
By Jay | January 3, 2008
My mini-retirement — aka vacation — is 3/4 over. It’s been great so far! I’ve been to the gym almost every day, and have done plenty of yoga, and haven’t had a drink since Sunday. To be honest, I haven’t even thought about alcohol. I’ve also managed to write a post a couple times per day. I find that I like working from home: I could get used to this.
There’s a certain loneliness to it though. I work in a very collaborative environment and deal with a LOT of people in my normal workday. But during my two weeks of vacation I haven’t dealt with many people at all. I wake up around 7:30am, have coffee with M. Then he leaves for work and I spend the morning blogging and reading other blogs. Around 1:00pm I take a long walk. I get to the gym between 2 and 3, work out, and am home by 5:30 or so to cook dinner. Around 7ish the big event of the day happens; M. comes home and we eat dinner. Then I write another blog entry while he washes the dishes, and we spend the rest of the evening watching TV, retiring around 11:00pm.
It’s a nice rhythm, but if I worked from home all the time I would need to get involved with some volunteer group or self-improvement group to get some social interaction. And if I were single I think I would have gone absolutely stir-crazy by now.

The good thing is, you both are experiencing - if only for a moment, what we all are working towards. The ability to do what we want, when we want, with the person or people that mean the most to us.
Bet this only served to strengthen your bond and love with M.

There is a certain loneliness to working from home but if you were to say work from home 3 days out of the week then you would be able to have the best of both worlds. The biggest problem with working from home for me is staying motivated on the task at hand and not getting distracted.

Dedicated,
It has been nice to feel this, although since I only have two weeks I don’t quite feel that freedom yet. But I know now what I’m working toward.
And yes, I have felt closer to M. lately. I’m remembering how nice it is to have someone in my life.
Matt,
Once I get my debt paid off I’m thinking about negotiating a 3-day per week job. As you say, it would be the best of both worlds, and I’d have the security of a steady income plus the time to pursue other opportunities.
I have that problem with not getting distracted too. There is an awful lot of stuff on the internet!
