More Sidewalk Finds and Some Blog Posts that Caught My Eye

Posted by Jay on January 12th, 2008

I had another good find today — was walking along the street and came upon a box of books someone was throwing away. It had obviously been rummaged through, and lots of books had been taken, but there were still a few left, including a copy of Jessica Simpson’s wedding book, called “I Do,” and an art book from the Museum of Modern Art, still in its shrink wrap. I grabbed them and, as soon as I got home, put them up on Amazon.com. Amazingly, the Jessica Simpson wedding book goes for $40.00+, and sold about half an hour after I put it up. The Museum of Modern Art book sold half an hour later, for $35.00. I find books occasionally and list them on Amazon, but I never made $75 in one day!

I also came across some interesting blogs today. Matt at One Million and Beyond posts about Giving Up Time for Money. I trade a lot of time for the money I earn from my full time job, and am becoming more frugal partly so that I don’t need to earn so much money. I want more freedom to spend time working on things that I enjoy, like this blog. It’s tough to achieve this balance.

After my little rant this morning about the media, I came across this post at The Baglady. I couldn’t agree more. One of these days I’ll write about who I will vote for in the upcoming presidential election.

Mike at Queercents writes about the difference between acquisition and fulfillment. How many of us buy things that we think will fulfill us somehow, but that sit around unused? Clothes and books are my weak spots. Good marketers know how to play on this tendency, so watch out.

Amazing that in essence, you get ‘paid’ to walk around the city!

Yes, it’s true. The funny thing is, these finds have always been there. I wonder how many times I’ve walked right past a book that would pull in $45 on Amazon.com, because I didn’t want to be bothered with picking it up and carrying it home.

I’m realizing that the small things really do add up and make a difference.
