Advertising on My Blog
By Jay | January 15, 2008
When I don’t post much it usually means that I am spending a lot of time in the office and this time is no exception. I’ll be finishing up a project tomorrow though and will have more time to blog after I’m done.
One item I have been thinking about over the last few days is blog advertising. I’ve added some Google Adsense advertising on my blog, and haven’t been very happy with the results. Not many people click the ads (to be honest, I don’t ever click the ads when I’m surfing the web). And they clutter up my blog design.
To make matters worse, I checked in on Sunday and saw that Adsense had put up an ad for Mitt Romney on my blog. Ugh.
I often see dating service advertisements come up, and there have been some other ads from advertisers who I don’t feel good giving publicity to. I don’t mind advertising for groups or companies that I like, like Kiva.org, but I’m thinking about getting rid of my blog’s Adsense ads.
Do any of you have opinions about Adsense ads?

Adsense revenue comes mostly from searchers via google, yahoo or msn. That does take a while, I know I didn’t add any to my site until after a 9-10 months…
There are also Blogads that you can try… contact me if you are interested.

You have to be patient with blog advertising… you can’t just throw up ads and expect results. I believe you’d need a solid base of content and visitors before you have something advertisers are interested in.

Thanks, it’s the adsense ads that are annoying me. But in terms of revenue, I agree that it takes a while.
I’m at sort of a transition with my blog. It has been a place where I informally worked things out for myself, figuring that reading my thoughts might be helpful to other people. I’m at a stage now where I realize what I need to do financially. It’s still not always easy, but it’s getting easier.
As far as my blog is concerned, I don’t want to lose the personal feel of it, but do believe it’s time to take a more professional view.
Dawn and Flexo, you both have established readerships, and have done the work. I do appreciate your advice. Thanks.
Dawn, I’ll be in touch over the weekend about Blogads.

I’ve got Adsense up on my site and to be honest I don’t get very much out of it. I tend to stick to the text based ads rather than the banners for me that seems to both work better and be more contextual.
Good luck with your experiments.
