Winter in New York
By Jay | January 20, 2008
Brrr, it’s cold outside! 24 degrees, which is unusually low for noontime in Brooklyn. The sun is pouring through my window now, but even so it is chilly here where I write, and my hands are cold. I’m actually thinking of baking something to have an excuse to put the oven on.
I used to love the winter. I am from New England, and never thought anything of skiing all day in January. I’ve lived in both Vermont and New Hampshire, where the temperature stays below zero for weeks on end sometimes.
But in New York City we are forced to deal with the weather as part of our day in ways that most people in the US never have to think about. In Vermont I would go outside in the winter to ski — downhill or cross country. But if I went to the store I’d hop in my car and drive, spending only a minute walking across a parking lot. Same was true with my commute to work.
Here in Brooklyn, I have to walk a half mile to the subway in the morning, in my work clothes. A long overcoat just isn’t as warm as long underwear and a heavy parka. And believe me, there is nothing as cold as walking home from the store with 30 pounds of groceries and the wind off the harbor blowing through every gap in my winter clothing.
Summer is even worse. Imagine spending half an hour in a jam-packed subway car when the temperature is 95 degrees….I’ve had mornings where I’ve had to stop at the gym for a shower after my commute.
At any rate, this will be a good day for catching up on the blogs that I like to read, and taking care of other financial tasks.

I’ve always wanted to go to New York and if everything goes well, I will be there through an internship program for 09 summer. Though I can’t say I’m looking forward to jam packed subways in hot weather.

Jay;
Being from the midwest, I am like being from Vermont or New Hampshire. I have never walked anywhere - and here is S. California is the same. Keep warm!
