Book Scavenging
By Jay | January 31, 2008
I thought this article in the New York Times was interesting. It’s about two homeless guys who find books on the streets of Manhattan and sell them to the Strand Bookstore, a huge used bookstore on Broadway and 12th Street. Each guy finds several boxes worth of books overnight, and then bring them to The Strand in the morning, where a buyer picks out the ones that the store wants for resell.
I keep an eye out for books when I happen to be out walking or riding my bike, and then I sell my books on the internet. The internet makes all the difference. These guys probably get about $0.50 per book, whereas I’ve often been getting $10+ for my books.
I’m grateful for having a comfortable apartment and stability in my life.

Where do you sell your books?
I prefer amazon- less mess

Amazon has higher commissions, so I list my books on Half.com. If they’re over $10, I also list them on Amazon because they seem to sell faster.
I haven’t tried any of the other online services yet.
