    Uncertainty

    By Jay | February 12, 2008

I’ve written about some of the financial issues in my relationship, but things are also getting dicey at work. There have been a lot of closed door meetings over the past week, and I can tell that the managers of my team are under a great deal of stress. I think cuts are coming.

I never like these interludes. I have been through them before, and I still am not used to the feeling. There is a sense of uncertainty; we are unsure about how much effort we should be putting into our projects as they might not go forward. On the other hand, It’s not a good time to look unoccupied.

I’m keeping my head down and doing my job. But I hate this. I like to push new ideas, propose new projects, and right now it’s all about survival, maintenance, coasting through the recession.

A lot of my co-workers are stressed by what’s going on. No one trusts anyone else; there’s a feeling of general suspicion. There is the feeling that the other shoe is going to drop, and we’re just waiting for it to happen.

Does anyone else feel this type of atmosphere at their jobs?

It is interesting that you ask that Jay. We have had one of our SAP teams laid off until “further notice,” which is insane to me because they are in a middle of an installation. I sometimes think that the knee jerk reaction of a few throws a lot of good people out of work. Hang in there - you sound like you have really solid skills and can pick up another position quickly…

Get to work early. Stay a little bit longer. Smile. Look and be busy. Produce and get results. Make sure the ‘powers that be’ know you are functioning at a profit. For them. Start doing things that will save your boss money.

Become Indispensable. Network. Keep your eyes and ears open. TRUST NO ONE. When it comes to a job, food on the table etc, people do weird things.

Make sure you have emergency fund, money in the bank and a Plan B. Start cutting back on everything and conserve as much cash as possible.

Been there. Done that. A few times. It is very, very scary. And oh yes, start praying.

      Good luck.

Yep, my instincts were correct. 4 members of my team were let go. Thousands across the firm.

I’ll write more in a post.
