    A Mini-Vacation

    By Jay | March 19, 2008

The financial markets are closed for Friday, and I’ve decided to take the day off tomorrow as well. I need a little break. The atmosphere in the office has been very tense, and when out of the office I’ve been pushing myself on my books, so haven’t had much time to relax, or to read my favorite blogs, or anything else.

So I’m going to leave for my parents’ house in Connecticut tomorrow morning for a weekend of rest. I’ll do some book scouting on the way up (would be nice to find enough books & cds with value to pay for the car rental), but otherwise will not go near a book or the computer except to write a few blog entries.

I haven’t blogged much over the past couple weeks and I find that I miss it. This time by myself at the computer, putting my thoughts into words, helps me to make sense of a lot of the craziness that is going on around me now. It helps to keep me grounded. I used to keep a diary all through high school and college. I’d often write 3-4 pages per day. I saved all those old diaries and find that I really wrote intelligently back then. I was a bit self-absorbed (and probably still am) as are most college students, but I had a lot of insights while writing that were very valuable and have stuck with me.

I’m also using this weekend to do some introspection & switch over to a healthier lifestyle. Lately I’ve been really awful about sweets, eating cakes, ice cream and all kinds of stuff I don’t usually eat. I’ve also been drinking a fair amount of wine, about half a bottle per day. The Spring Equinox is traditionally a time for me to stop drinking and to diet for a few months; most years I go from the first day of Spring all the way through the Summer living a healthy lifestyle, and this year will be no exception.

Anyway, keep an eye out for some posts on all of this. And I will avoid any mention of the financial markets — promise! In fact, I plan not to even look at them tomorrow or over the weekend.
