Light at the End of the Tunnel

    By Jay | April 16, 2008

I’m finally seeing the end coming for my recent busy spell, and it can’t come soon enough for me. Today was a beautiful day in NYC and, for the first time in about a month, I took a real lunch hour. I heated up my lunch (leftovers from last night’s beef stew dinner) and brought them to a little park at Worldwide Plaza, on 8th and 49th. I sat down in the sun and savored a lunch outside, soaking in the Spring.

I don’t know how people manage to work 70 hour weeks, for weeks on end. I’ve done it for a month and it’s killing me. Many of my co-workers do this 50 weeks a year. Investment banking employees have a bad image in our culture now, but one thing I do give them (them — what am I saying: I’m one too…) credit for is that they work very very hard.

But me, that’s not what I want. An hour sitting in a park on a warm day in April is worth more than any satisfaction I could ever get from a job. It’s been a rough period, and I’m glad it’s finally winding down.

      Hey Jay,

I’m glad its starting to wind down for you as well. I worked for a year at that breakneck level and the net result was I needed a month off before I was even remotely ready to go back to full time work. Now I’m mindful not to go over the 50 mark for any reason and I don’t do work stuff at home unless its a true emergency (and not some chicken little’s version of one).

I hope things stay at a normal level for you without this insanity - its simply not worth it. Have you managed to keep the book selling up in all of this?
