    Summer Vacation?

    By Jay | May 1, 2008

I got out of work at 5 tonight (a half-day for me), and decided to take the night off. I was home by 6, had eaten by 7, and now it’s 9:30. The dishes are done, I’ve caught up on my blogging buddies’ blogs, and now I’m settled in to write a blog entry of my own before going to bed early & reading for an hour or two. It feels good to relax.

Storm clouds are on the horizon at work again. Looks like another big round of layoffs, as soon as next week. The last round, back in February, felt mainly tactical — like they were getting rid of non-performers. But I have a feeling that this round of layoffs is going to be more extensive. I’ve written about this before, but I can’t say I’d mind terribly if I got laid off. My financial situation is much better than it was four months ago. My book business has picked up quite nicely. And I’ve heard from people I know that got laid off in February that the standard severance package for people at my level is one year of pay. One year — imagine that. I could have a summer vacation, just like when I was a kid and school let out for 3 months. I could get back into excellent shape. I could build my book business and start some other ventures. I would have time to make this into a real blog! It wouldn’t be such a bad thing.

Well, we’ll see what happens next week.

It’s May 1, and about time to update my financial information. I’ll do this over the weekend. I think the news will be pretty good!

      Hi Jay,

I’ve been in the situation where I got a servernce package twice. The first time I jumped right back into the market and continued to burn myself out. The second time I took a month off to work on one of my side projects. I didn’t finish it but I’m a lot closer than I would have ever been otherwise. I also mentally recharged a bit. If you do happen to get laid off and get a healthy package definitely take some time off.

You might even get find your side projects and businesses make enough for you to not need a full time ‘day job’.

      Either way good luck.
