More Layoffs
By Jay | May 22, 2008
There was another round of layoffs at my firm yesterday. This just doesn’t seem to end. It hit our IT group and our “special investments” group (the ones who put together all those crazy “structured finance” securities). Two good friends & mentors of mine were let go.
It’s been stressful to go through this. I wish they’d do it all at once, but it’s been drawn out over a couple months. Those who are left are the calculating, political people, the ones who engage in brinkmanship more than doing any actual work of value. I can play the political game with the best of them (that’s why I’m still there), but I don’t like it. It’s a very strange, enervating environment at my job right now. And I’m very close to giving notice.
I’m trying to think positively, but I can think of few positive things about my job, other than that it provides a steady paycheck. I’ve been book-hunting like crazy over the last couple weeks, and doing very well at it too. I’m not quite ready to take the plunge yet, but I have set the end of the year as my deadline: if I don’t get laid off by January, I will quit and sell on the internet full-time. And in the meantime, I will take the time I need to establish my business.

Setting a deadline of Jan and setting your business up in the meantime is probably the best option. It gives you time to prepare yourself for not having a guaranteed steady income like your job provides. And it will give you something to look forward to.

We’ll see if I can hang in there until January, but it does make a lot of sense to stay for the rest of the year, save some extra money, and learn more about the business and possible ways to expand it.
