Home Sweet Home
By Jay | July 15, 2008
I’ve been in Canada for the last week, for a family reunion near Ottawa, and then a few days of rest and relaxation. I usually blog a lot when on vacation, but this time I didn’t want anything to do with the computer, so I left it home. I had a few withdrawal symptoms, but the break was a good one. In fact, it was nice, real nice. Now I’m back home to face the grind again.
My finances (which I need to update on my Networth IQ thing) aren’t doing so well this month.
First, I found out that I needed two crowns. The first one was paid for by insurance, but the second was out of pocket and close to $2,000. Then my laptop died, so I had to buy a new one. I need a pretty good one for work, so ended up forking out another $2,000. And then our trip to Canada ran another $2,000. So in just four weeks I ran up about $6,000 of expenses in excess of what I had been expecting. I have to say, the trip anyway was worth it. I haven’t seen anyone on the Canadian side of my family for several years, and it was a thrill to get the invite a couple weeks ago. They all loved M., and we had a great time. But this will hurt the budget and the debt paydown.
Ah well, time to redouble my efforts.

Hey Jay, Welcome back. A vacation to get away is always good for you (though I was worried that you had not blogged for a long time). Bummer about the crowns (I have 3 myself), and the computer. Those unexpected expenses can throw people for a loop. Medical ones are a common reason people file for bankruptcy.

Hey Jay, Glad you had a good vacation - its a good thing you left the computer. I’ve decided that when I take vacations the computer really needs some down time as well. The result is when I’m back I’m much more refreshed. I’m sure you’ll be able to get back up to speed with the finances in no time. How’s the book business going?

Hey, thanks for the comments. Paul, it’s true that I haven’t been blogging much. I wish I had more time to do so these days, but life sometimes gets in the way. I really want to get back to blogging on a regular basis, and I think that this will happen over the next few weeks.
Matt, the book business is going very well. In fact, it’s the main reason I haven’t been blogging much. I work from 8:30-6 at my day job, and then come home and pack books for two hours. By the time I’m done I’m so tired that I have to shut off the computer and veg in front of the TV for a while. It all sounds mundane, but I’ve been surprised at just how much money I can make doing this.
